We are excited to announce that a new mural has been unveiled today on International Avenue!
We would like to thank everyone that came out to the unveiling today and special thanks to Tim Hortons – Forest Lawn for being the home to our 10th mural!
About the Mural
The 10th International Avenue mural is painted by Lyse DeSelliers and is dedicated to the Greater Forest Lawn community. It is entitled “Meet me at the Park”. The 4’ x 16’ mural will be permanently mounted on the south side of the new Tim Horton’s building located at 4750 17 Avenue SE. Mike Shymka, president of the International Avenue Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ), whose organization commissioned the art piece says, “This community has seen generations upon generations of kids connecting at the skating rink. Along with the other murals on International Avenue it’s another celebration of our heritage and a reminder of the great community that we live and work in – a community where everyone is welcome.”
About the Artist
Lyse DeSelliers is a Quebec born artist who was raised in Sainte Foy. The surrounding provincial parks near her home allowed her to develop a love of nature and animals which is often the theme of her art work. Lyse is a professionally educated doctor of veterinary medicine. She called Calgary her home from 1991 until just last year. She now resides in Penticton. Lyse’s painting style is unique as she likes to use a coloured under paint, usually in red or orange tones, and then adds lots of bright colours on top to create vibrant imagery. She paints in a negative technique, in other words, she creates her shapes by painting the background around them. Her favourite medium is acrylic. Her work has been featured in both group and solo shows when not completing commissioned art work. DeSelliers has received the McAra Print Award in 2010 for her outstanding work.
The mural is made possible by Tim Hortons’ in Forest Lawn who recently built a brand new building and just opened this past December. The mural will be cared and maintained under the International Avenue BRZ program.
